This month’s parish: St Helier
‘St Helier may lack the rugged beauty of Jersey’s north coast, but what it offers the photographer is not simply an urban landscape: the Parish actually has more countryside and agricultural land than some of the ‘rural’ parishes, and for proof of that look no further than St Helier’s win for La Route des Petits Camps in last year’s Scenic Lane competition, run by La Société Jersiaise.
‘There is also the Parish’s varied coastline: the beach and bathing pool at Havre des Pas, the St Helier section of St Aubin’s Bay, while Elizabeth Castle and the harbours offer rich pickings to the photographer looking for a maritime scene. As for the town of St Helier itself, there are dozens of individual buildings, both old and modern, which make good pictures, and they are also worth photographing collectively, the town offering several obvious vantage points such as the multi-storey car parks, Fort Regent and the escarpment around the main part of the town from which to view it.
‘But for the photographer who wants to capture images of people, whether at work or at play, there is nowhere better in the Island: whether it’s shoppers in the central markets, people relaxing in the squares, parks and gardens, or people attending one of our many events, there are photographic subjects aplenty.’
