Cricket: Jersey beat Nepal to keep qualification hopes alive

The triumph leaves the Islanders just a point adrift of a place in Group A’s top four, in which they need to finish if they are to progress to the knock-out stages.

Having won the toss and elected to field, Jersey took the early wickets they were after, Nat Watkins striking first to dismiss opener Binod Bhandari.

In stark contrast to the destructive Namibian batting lineup Jersey had faced a day earlier at Clontarf, Nepal struggled to settle and wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

While the entire Jersey bowling figures make for impressive reading, man-of-the-match Watkins was the pick of the bunch, taking three wickets for 20 runs from his four overs.

A productive final couple of overs helped Nepal to finish their 20 overs on 105 runs for eight wickets.

Although they lost three wickets on their way to victory, in truth, the Islanders made light work of the run chase.

Peter Gough (27 from 32 balls), Jonty Jenner (30 from 26) and Corne Bodenstein (27 not out) all made valuable contributions as Neil MacRae’s men secured the win with 23 deliveries – and seven wickets – to spare.

Jersey will play hosts Ireland at Malahide on Sunday at 10 am in their final Group A match, knowing defeat would eliminate them from the tournament.
