The Civil Aviation Authority this week gave the London hub the go-ahead to increase its fees by the rate of inflation plus 0.5 per cent.

But easyJet, which will take over the Jersey to Gatwick route when Flybe ceases its operations from the airport next spring, has warned that, based on Gatwick’s own figures, ‘passengers could be paying £28 more per flight’.

In a statement, Carolyn McCall, chief executive of easyJet, said: ‘Easyjet is disappointed with the increase in proposed average charges of RPI 0.5 per cent as this is based on the airport’s proposals and ignores those of the airlines who gave evidence to support a lowering in charges which would have led to a reduction in fares paid by passengers.’
