Doing the job of the Rent Control Tribunal
Share this:
From E Duhamel.
THE craziest States scheme yet is Deputy Pryke wishing to create a snooper’s charter, along with her secret health police, which could well be a breach of our civil liberties.
In almost all of her proposals, they were already in place when a Rent Control Tribunal was in existence. They would have inspected any properties that were being charged unrealistic rents, or were a health risk, or if no repairs were taking place. It was also a way of curbing the actions of unscrupulous landlords.
The tribunal would have reported back to the relevant authorities, and action or prosecution would have taken place. However, in the wisdom of previous Housing Ministers, I believe, that the Rent Control Tribunal was abandoned, which was more in favour of the landlords, as still applies today.
Should this snooper’s charter proposition be adopted by the States, it would also be a golden opportunity for any bogus ‘Health police’ to gain entry to any unsuspecting household.
This snooper’s charter goes well alongside Housing Minister Deputy Green’s proposition to increase rents to within 90 per cent of private sector rents. I fail to understand how the Housing Committee can continue to call themselves the providers of social housing and affordable rents. To continue to be competing with the private sector rents can hardly be called social housing, and the majority of rents are unaffordable, thus the need for all the rent rebate.
When one looks at the accommodation available in the JEP classified advertising pages, and what is being asked for in rents, is Deputy Green going to use 90 per cent of these rents to tenants in States or housing trust accommodation?
To continue chasing the private sector rents as every past Housing Minister has done, will mean more and more tenants applying for rent rebate, including all those who are at present, trying to pay their way.
If the benefit system is already costing £90 million plus, how long will it be sustainable before total collapse? Every care should be taken when making some of these propositions that affects a great many lives, and with little thought of making life more difficult for those already struggling to keep up.
