AROUND 70 people, including the family of a person who had been rescued, went to a recent coastguard open day.

Islanders had the opportunity to see behind the scenes of St Helier’s Vessel Traffic Service and get a better understanding of the work carried out by the Jersey Coastguard team and search-and-rescue organisations during the event.

The open day took place at Maritime House and on the pontoons at Elizabeth Harbour.

Crews from the Jersey Lifeboat Association, the RNLI, States of Jersey Fire Service and Air Rescue Drone Team gave talks to the public about their work, the equipment they use and how they respond to emergencies, call-outs and rescues in Island waters.

Luke de la Haye, watch officer and open-day organiser, said: “It was great to see the Maritime Operations Centre so full and whenever I had a chance to look out of the window, the pontoons looked busy with visitors.

“There was a range of people interested in finding out more about what we do.

“I even met the family of someone who had fallen ill on board a vessel that I was involved with returning to shore, which was amazing,” added Mr de la Haye.

“All the feedback we received was positive.”
