Overwhelming support for Latin American plans to create a whale sanctuary in the South Atlantic prompted Japan, Iceland, Norway and other pro-whaling nations to walk out.
The sanctuary would have limited Japan’s whaling activities in the South Atlantic. By leaving the conference, the whale hunting countries made the conference inquorate, which stopped the vote taking place. The topic will now be discussed at next year’s meeting.
Anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd, who have been demonstrating outside the conference all week, are also disappointed with the result of yesterday’s conclusion but said that their protests had gone well.
