A SCHEME designed to encourage Islanders to buy electric vehicles is due to close by the end of the year, having already approved “hundreds of applications”, according to the government.
The Electric Vehicle Purchase Incentive was launched last summer and provides grants of up to £3,500 towards new or used electric vehicles – which must be bought through approved retailers – up to the value of £40,000, The scheme also offered people £300 off the price of electric mopeds and motorcycles.
In a recent update, the government said that 900 applications had been approved under the scheme, which has been funded by money allocated to the Carbon Neutral Roadmap, a strategy designed to help the Island hit net zero by 2050.
Applications are still being accepted and the government said that the remaining funds would be administered on a “first come, first served basis”.
Environment Minister Steve Luce said: “Due to the high level of demand, the funding available has almost all been allocated, so we expect the scheme will close before the end of this year.
“Islanders who are thinking about switching to electric vehicles and would like financial support from this scheme are encouraged to apply now before it’s too late.”
Deputy Luce said there were no plans to repeat the scheme. More information is available at gov.je/goelectric.
