And with two experienced teams, the men’s and women’s managers, Frank Hambly and Jean Holmes respectively, are confident their sides will do well.
Said Hambly: ‘With the exception of singles bowler Jamie MacDonald we have an extremely experienced side and I’ve every confidence in Jamie too, because he has played a lot of international competition in his short career already and only last July he won bronze in the men’s singles at the Atlantic Championships.
‘The men finished tenth out of the 24 countries in the last World Championships four years ago in Scotland so hopefully we can match that again or improve on it.
‘Four of our five won medals at the Atlantic Championship in Ayr last July, so yes, I’m confident that they will all give a fine account of themselves again and possibly return with some medals.’
MacDonald will play in the singles and pairs, the latter with Lee Nixon.
Cyril Renouf, Allan Shaw and Derek Boswell compete in the triples with Lee Nixon joining the triple to complete the fours team.
Hambly added: ‘The groups have already been drawn; there are no easy groups; this is the World Championship and it’s the best bowlers in the world on show so competition is going to be very good.’
Women’s team manager Jean Holmes said: ‘I’m confident the team will do well.
It’s a long way to go to come back empty-handed so hopefully we can bring a medal or two back with us.
‘The team has been chosen on playing records and it is a strong and very experienced side.
We know the competition is going to be tough and I will be giving everyone the support and encouragement they need to do well.’
Jersey’s women finished eighth in the last Worlds in Scotland.
Last July Jersey’s bowling team had possibly their finest hour when they finished second overall at the Atlantic championship held in Ayr, Scotland.
The four of Chrissie Grimes, Joan Renouf, Liz Cole and Lindsey Greechan won gold; Cyril Renouf and Derek Boswell pairs silver and MacDonald singles bronze.
The Christchurch event starts will be played between 12 and 27 January with the women represented by Karina Bisson (singles); Sue Dingle and Gaynor Thomas (pairs); Chrissie Grimes, Liz Cole and Bisson (triples) and Thomas, Grimes, Cole and Dingle (fours).
