The man, believed to be in his 40s, will not be named until his next of kin have been traced.

It is understood that the man worked in the Island, but had no family here.

The emergency services were called to the scene – near the German observation tower and command bunker on the headland – shortly after 9 am.

They had been alerted by a passing vessel, the Commodore Goodwill, that a wrecked car was at the foot of the cliffs.

A firefighter was winched down to the wrecked red Volkswagen Lupo, and the man’s body was discovered lying nearby.

A police spokesman said that no other vehicle was believed to have been involved in the incident.
