A 22-YEAR-OLD woman who was caught using her mobile phone while driving close to police headquarters has been fined £150.
The Magistrate’s Court was told that Siobhan Christine White displayed “a callous disregard for the law” in committing the offence on the afternoon of 16 August.
It heard that she was driving her blue Ford Fiesta on Route du Fort when a police officer who had just left the headquarters spotted her at 2pm.
Legal adviser Kerry Grieve, prosecuting, said: “She was looking at her lap and not at the road.”
White admitted looking at the phone but said she had not been talking on it. And she pleaded not guilty at a parish hall inquiry on 18 September.
Ms Grieve added that White had “quite a few matters recorded against her”. The most recent offence was possession of a controlled drug, in May this year.
Relief Magistrate David Cadin said: “This was a callous disregard for the law.
“The reason the law is there is to stop accidents. As a result of using a phone while driving, people have died.”
He allowed her to pay the fine at the rate of £10 per week as she is currently on Income Support and did not ban her from driving.
