It was the worst day so far of three for the Jersey contingent, as McKinnon and O’Neil drew with Cyprus, 1-1; Grimes and Renouf lost 2-0 to the formidable Irish pairing of Margaret Johnson and Martin McHugh; O’Neil lost to England’s Catherine Popple by one shot in the second set and McKinnon lost 12-7 and 8-8 in his two sets against Jeff Rabkin of Israel.
Meanwhile Renouf’s defeat at the hands of Colin Peacock of Scotland was the most frustrating as, tying at 8-8 in the second and last set, he was beaten to a measure of quarter of an inch from the bowl to the jack.
Grimes’ two wins against Portugal and Israel, who finished overall second last year, was the one highlight of the day, however, but the four-strong team know they will have to do much better today if they are to improve their overall position.
Scotland are currently overall leaders followed by England, Guernsey, Wales, Ireland, Israel and Jersey.
The tournament, which has attracted 14 teams, finishes tomorrow.
