Gean O’Neil and Gus McKinnon enjoyed a 2-0 win over the Canary Islands, winning their pairs match comfortably by 3 and 5, while Cyril Renouf beat his Wales opponent 2-0 in the singles.
Although Chrissie Grimes lost 2-0 to Holland, it was her first singles defeat since the competition began on Monday.
The Jersey team completed yesterday’s series of matches at Vilamoura with a string of 1-1 draws.
Renouf and Grimes drew 1-1 with the Canary Islands; McKinnon 1-1 with both Portugal and Scotland; Renouf his singles against Portugal and Gean O’Neil 1-1 with Cyprus.
‘Knowing what a superb player Scotland’s Grant Logan is, I’d have settled for a draw before we started,’ said McKinnon last night.
‘I won the first set, but he won the second – I was leading 6-2 before he came back to beat me 12-8.
At the moment the winners are likely to come from England, Ireland or Guernsey – they’ve sent their strong Commonwealth Games team over and they’re pretty well pulling out all stops to win.’ While Jersey have hauled themselves up the table, past Israel, with five teams still above them they will do exceedingly well today to muster a challenge for any of the top five places.
In the singles today Grimes was taking on Spain and Renouf Cyprus.
But McKinnon and O’Brien have the most difficult task when they meet Guernsey.
‘We knew before we arrived here that there would be no easy touches,’ said McKinnon.
‘But we’ll do our best to win.’
