Having lost badly on Friday, JICC made amends with a convincing win on Sunday against the newcomers Refreshers CC – a nomadic club of long standing (established by Lord Monckton in 1935) drawn from cricketing barristers around London.JICC chose to bat first on Friday but after a solid start of 26 in eight overs from skipper Nigel Crocker and Alan Lesbirel, they faded badly to end with just 73 runs off 21 overs.Only a battling 25 from Tim Kearsey gave any substance after Richard Saunders’ eight overs yielded five wickets for 24 runs.
The visitors’ reply was a long drawn out affair of 31 overs.
Philip Evelegh top-scored with 24 and they lost five wickets along the way.
Another 30-40 runs from JICC would have made quite a difference.Refreshers decided to bat first on Sunday, but were immediately set on their heels with Evelegh run out in the first over after a classic case of confused calling.Saunders and Gavin Brize added 37 for the third wicket but then Colin Rotheram, with 4 for 22 in eight overs, dismissed the middle-order leaving Refreshers on 83 for 6.Oliver Sells and Charlie Hales added a further 42 but the rate never went above four an over and the tourists closed their 40 overs on 145 for 8.After lunch JICC’s Danny Bertram (32) and Rob Tewkesbury, with a splendid 69 not out (eight 4, two 6s) went for it adding 65 together in just nine overs until Bertram (three 4s, two 6s) was leg before wicket.Garret O’Brien with 24 added a further 65 with Tewkesbury until he was stumped off the bowling of Sells.
Tewkesbury hit the winning runs in the 21st over.
