In the States yesterday, the Policy and Resources Committee won convincing support for their in-principle proposals to base the new policy on a smartcard system and to concentrate on regulating the influx of people into Jersey.
At the end of the four-hour debate, only Senator Stuart Syvret and Deputy Geoff Southern voted against the proposals.P&R president Senator Frank Walker, who proposed the in-principle debate, said that he was pleased with the outcome, but added that the full debate on the subject would be more difficult.’It’s almost a unique experience in the States to get such overwhelming support for any proposals relating to population issues,’ he said.
‘We have to be aware that that was the easy bit.
The difficult bit starts now with all the work that has to be done by all the various groups we are establishing.’ He said that his department now had to put together a great deal of background information for States Members in advance of the full debate.
