Man found guilty of domestic abuse after trial

The Royal Court. (39001566)

A “CONTROLLING, aggressive and threatening” 26-year-old man has been found guilty of domestic abuse against his former girlfriend following a three-day trial in the Royal Court. In one message Andre Correia told the victim: “My wish is to squeeze your neck until you are purple.”

Giving evidence, the victim told a jury that Correia also tried to keep her apart from her friends and family, and would bombard her with threatening and abusive messages when she went out without him.

He was described by Crown Advocate Lauren Hallam, prosecuting, as “a controlling, aggressive and threatening man”.

The Jurats convicted Correia of domestic abuse but did not accept all the claims made against him, including the victim’s allegation that he arrived at her home armed with a hammer and threatened to kill her.

Commissioner Sir William Bailhache was presiding, with Jurats Jane Ronge and Andrew Cornish sitting.
