THERE are opportunities for the Channel Islands “to work more closely together in many areas”, the Economic Development Minister has said following a visit to Alderney.

Deputy Kirsten Morel, accompanied by an officer from the Economy Department, went to the island after being invited by Alderney’s Economic Development Committee.

The two-day visit included a tour of Alderney’s heritage sites.

Meanwhile, the Jersey delegation shared insights on agriculture and fisheries.

A key focus of talks between the two islands was the Braye Opportunity Area, Alderney’s long-term project to transform the area around the harbour with new leisure, tourism, retail and hospitality facilities.

Deputy Morel said: “Alderney has been tremendously welcoming, and our discussions on issues ranging from connectivity to renewable energy have been productive.

“I believe that there are opportunities for all the Channel Islands to work more closely together in many areas, and I have committed to exploring opportunities for greater co-operation across all sectors.”

EDC chairman Alex Snowdon said: “It was a pleasure to host Deputy Morel in our island and share together the many ways in which we can work together for the benefit of both islands.

“In particular, much of the discussion centred around how the Channel Islands as a whole can be promoted as a destination for inward investment and tourism centred on our collective rich heritage and business opportunities.”
