A NEW museum space at Hamptonne has been opened in memory of one of the leading voices for the farm’s preservation as a heritage site.
The Tchèrquéthie Joan Stevens – alluding to its original use as a shed for carts – recognises the endeavours of the late president of the Société Jersiaise from 1971 to 1974 and the author of a series of seminal books about the Island’s heritage.
Mrs Stevens’ endeavours – remembered at the ceremony by her son, Philip, who had travelled to Jersey for the occasion – helped consolidate the partnership between the Société, the National Trust for Jersey Heritage and Jersey Heritage that led to Hamptonne’s new lease of life as a country life museum.
The space was opened by the Bailiff, Sir Timothy Le Cocq.
