ISLANDERS gathered at Trinity Church yesterday for the funeral of Simon Boas.

After being given a terminal cancer diagnosis, Mr Boas went on to inspire huge numbers of people by writing about love, life and death – his upbeat world view, first shared in essays for this newspaper, finding a wider audience after being picked up by national publications and read on BBC Radio 4.

The Jersey Overseas Aid executive director, described as “inspirational” and a “larger-than-life character”, passed away peacefully earlier this month with his family at his bedside.

Family and friends of Mr Boas came together in Trinity to remember his life.

Mr Boas’s thoughts on mortality are to be turned into a book, A Beginner’s Guide to Dying, which will be published later this year. Funds generated from its sales will go towards supporting people in the developing world and children needing palliative care.
