IF you’ve received a letter asking you to help out an investment consultant in Ukraine who has over £20 million in security funds stuck in China, don’t be fooled – it’s the latest scam.
The States police warned Islanders this week about the letter, in which the writer claims to be “Karpenko Elishchuk” from Ukraine and a “former member of the Contract Review and Award Committee of the Mineral Resources in Ukraine”.
The letter-writer claims to be seeking to “engage an interested overseas representative” to secure the $26.7 million in funds for them with an offer of being able to keep almost 45% of the money. They want all communication to be done via email or phone.
Capitalising on the unstable situation in the region, the writer then claims they intend to “relocate to the United Kingdom with my family due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war”.
The force urged Islanders who receive the letter not to respond or provide their personal details, saying: “Stay safe, never give out your personal information and if anything sounds too good to be true it usually is.”
