Woman stole from father 'after being put under pressure'

A 34-YEAR-OLD woman who stole her father’s bank card, cheque book and mobile phone and then left the Island has been put on probation and sentenced to 90 hours of community service.

Lara Carol Hill claimed that she had committed the offences after being put under pressure by her then partner to obtain money, the Magistrate’s Court heard.

The thefts were Hill’s second offence, after previously being sentenced for stealing £2,500 from her former employers Roberts West garage last year and paying a cheque for £830 to which she was not entitled into her bank account.

Outlining the latest offences, which took place in June, Advocate Howard Tobias, prosecuting, said Hill tried to use the stolen items in London.

Advocate Allana Binnie, defending, said that Hill had been put under “a great deal of pressure” to obtain money by a former partner.

She said: “She had already taken out a number of loans for him. He used all available methods to get money out of my client.”

Advocate Binnie added: “She is a genuine, caring, kind and compassionate person but she was facing guilt, fear and manipulation.”

She said that Hill, who pleaded guilty to larceny, had been glad that the bank card had been refused when she tried to use it in London.

“She returned to Jersey knowing that she would be met by the police at the Airport.

“She gave full co-operation and admitted the offence in interview. She has shown genuine and deep remorse.”

Relief Magistrate Sarah Fitz imposed a nine-month probation order and said she was adding the community service order as it was a second offence.

Hill was also ordered to pay compensation of £169.
