A CONTROVERSIAL trial of a one-way system in St John’s Road has been postponed until the new year.
The three-month scheme was originally expected to be introduced in August, but was delayed until Monday 4 December by the government to allow “further data gathering”.
During the trial, the lower part of the road, between the junction with Parade Road and Cheapside, will be made northbound only.
The scheme has drawn criticism from some Islanders, who said the changes would make the road more dangerous, and a petition calling for it to be thrown out gained more than 1,000 signatures.
In a statement, the government said: “The St John’s Road three-month one-way trial, which was due to start on Monday, has been postponed until the new year.
“This is due to unforeseen supply and labour issues, meaning the raised tables would not be in place in time for the trial. Additionally, following Storm Ciarán, resources are currently diverted to prioritise the clean-up operation and other urgent work.
“The Infrastructure and Environment project is in conjunction with the Parish of St Helier, who will work together to agree a new date for the trial.
“Everyone involved in implementing this trial apologises for the inconvenience that this unexpected delay may cause.”
