THE office of Senator will not be reinstated after a backbencher’s proposition was defeated following a lengthy debate in the States Assembly.
Deputy Moz Scott was bidding to bring back the Island-wide role – which was removed before the previous election – in time for the 2026 election.
But in the States on Wednesday, 30 Members voted against the proposition, with 14 for and one abstention.
Deputy Scott argued that the reinstatement would “improve specialised representation of Islandwide interests” and “enable States Members to focus on local community/constituency representation or other common-interest representation” without neglecting other areas.
But other Members were sceptical about the merits of the proposition, with Deputy Sam Mézec, the leader of Reform Jersey, calling it “the least coherent and logical” of all recent attempts to revive the role.
