Man (47) is bound over for aggressive behaviour at homeless shelter

A 47-YEAR-OLD man who punched and kicked the door at a homeless shelter and shouted abuse at staff inside has been bound over to be of good behaviour.

The Magistrate’s Court heard that Neil Christian Marret turned up at Sanctuary House in St Brelade at 5.30pm on the night of Saturday 25 November.

A member of staff provided him with some food and a blanket, but Crown Advocate Lauren Hallam, prosecuting, said he shouted abuse and tried to push his way in.

She said: “She took a few steps back and he said: ‘You’re scared of me, aren’t you?’

“He was blocking the door with his foot, but she managed to close it. He began to punch the door with his fists and kick the bottom of it, and was shouting through the letterbox.”

The staff member dialled 999 and the States police later found Marret on the beach. He admitted using threatening and abusive words and behaviour.

In mitigation, Advocate Greg Herold-Howes, defending, accepted the prosecution account but said: “He was not in a good place at that point.

“Saturday was particularly cold. He woke up with his blanket covered in frost.”

He recommended a binding-over order.

Relief Magistrate Peter Harris gave Marret credit for his guilty plea but said: “Your behaviour was clearly offensive and clearly abusive. In the last couple of years you have found yourself here far too often.”

He was bound over for six months.
