A PUFFIN that was rescued from St Ouen’s beach after it was found covered in oil has died.

The seabird was discovered by a member of the public last week and was subsequently taken in by the JSPCA Animals’ Shelter.

It was the first time a puffin had been in the organisation’s care since 2014.

In a post on Facebook, the JSPCA said: ‘Unfortunately we start today with some sad news. The puffin that came into our care on Friday has passed away. The team are devastated. It’s always hard for us when an animal we have been caring for passes away, but when it is such a special case like this puffin, it hits a little harder.

‘Caring for wildlife has its challenges. We never know the full back story or for how long they have been debilitated. For such an elusive animal like a puffin to come into our care, it must have been compromised for some time with the oil. This in turn would have had such a negative effect on its health and finding food.’
