A ‘MAJOR incident’ is to be declared at midnight as Jersey is set to be lashed by 100mph winds from Storm Ciarán.

Heavy rain and strong winds began to hit the Island early Wednesday evening, with the storm set to rapidly intensify and peak between 3am and 9am when the Island could be battered by violent-storm-force-eleven winds.

Jersey Met has already issued rare red level wind and coastal-flooding warnings.

In a statement, the government said: “In response to the significant disruption expected from Storm Ciarán later tonight and into Thursday 2 November, Jersey’s Strategic Coordination Group (SCG) is to escalate to ‘Major Incident’ status from midnight tonight (Wednesday 1 November).

“A multi-agency Situation Room has been set-up at States of Jersey Police Headquarters to help co-ordinate the response and will be operational from midnight.

“This is usual procedure in these circumstances and is a result of thorough planning and preparations across all emergency services, partner agencies and Government of Jersey who are ready to support Jersey residents.

“Islanders are advised to stay at home and to only travel if it is essential or if they are essential workers.

“Advice about travel, disruption to services, and how to stay safe will be shared on the social media channels of the Government of Jersey and States of Jersey Police.”

A dedicated non-emergency services advice line has been set up on 01534 612222.

This will allow Islanders to report incidents which do not require the emergency services.
