Jersey charity ‘losing out’ after used oil taken from café

A CHARITY that supports Islanders with disabilities has lost out on the money it would have received in return for collecting used oil, after 40 litres were allegedly taken from outside a beachfront café.

Used oil from the Gunsite Café, which was due to be donated to the charity Les Amis, has disappeared from its storage location outside the Route de la Haule business on two separate occasions in the past month.

This prompted café owner Anne Elliott to launch an appeal on social media, pleading with the culprits to “stop this activity”.

“You are effectively stealing from us, and depriving the charity Les Amis, who officially take our used oil,” she wrote in a post which was widely shared on Facebook.

Speaking to the JEP following her appeal, Mrs Elliott described “having things taken from you” as “not very nice”, and added that she was mainly concerned about the impact on Les Amis.

The charity explained that it collects used oil from various locations around the Island – including the Gunsite Café – and then sells it to a UK company.

Mrs Elliott explained that the oil could not be kept indoors at the café, as there was not enough space, but hoped that her social media appeal would prevent any further thefts.

It is not known how much the charity sells the used oil for, but the website webuywasteoil.co.uk offers 35p per litre.

In 2017, more than £130 was taken from the café during a break-in on Christmas Eve.

At the time, Mrs Elliott, said that the cash and the till were replaceable but she had been left feeling uneasy by the incident.
