GAS supplies will be returned to homes and businesses from Tuesday in a phased approach that “will likely take several days”, Island Energy has said in its latest update on Jersey’s outage.
The energy company said that its engineers would continue to visit all customers to check their gas supplies, and that the States of Jersey, States police, all Island Energy staff and additional resources from the UK were working together to reach customers as soon as possible.
They released a statement on Sunday morning just before 10am, an hour after promising to do so at 9am.
It said: “We have isolated and fixed the issue at our plant in Jersey. A software error triggered the safety procedure which shut down the plant, which it will do if there is any risk to the network, ensuring that we are safe. This issue has now been fixed and we are working on the restoration plan to get the gas network back up.
“We’re working closely with the States of Jersey, the police and mobilising all our staff and getting additional resources from the UK to get to customers as soon as we can.
“As we’ve outlined there are strict procedures we need to follow to make sure we introduce gas back into the system in a controlled and safe manner. The restoration plan must be deployed in stages to ensure the safe introduction of gas back into the system.
“This means that from Tuesday we will start to bring customers back onto supply, a process that will likely take several days to fully complete.
“We are prioritising our vulnerable and commercial customers so if you are concerned about a neighbour or relative, please call: 01534 755500.
“The safety of our customers is paramount, and we thank you for your patience while we continue to work through our plans, we will keep everyone updated regularly and will issue further information at 5pm today.”
Island Energy first confirmed the gas outage on Saturday morning, with homes and local businesses stating that they had no hot water and could not use their gas cookers.
