JERSEY Overseas Aid has said it will ‘continue to monitor’ relief efforts in both Libya and Morocco after both countries were hit by natural disasters.

At least 30,000 people have been displaced following severe flooding in Libya, where the death toll continues to rise. More than 5,000 bodies have been recovered as of this morning.

It comes just days after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake stretching from the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakesh killed around 3,000 people in Morocco.

A JOA spokesperson said: ‘JOA is receiving regular updates regarding the relief effort in Libya following the devastating floods in the east of the country. We are aware that local Libyan Red Crescent are on the ground responding to the flooding, including providing first aid to those injured and emotional support to people in shock.

‘We will continue to monitor the situation to understand the extent of the needs and how best can potentially support those in need. We also continue to monitor the situation in Morocco.’
