A 25-YEAR-OLD man has admitted speeding in a work van he was not insured to use – and his employer has admitted not checking the insurance.

Daniel Steven Turmel was spotted driving the Volkswagen van at 40mph along Rue du Pont Marquet in St Brelade, a road with a 30mph speed limit, the Magistrate’s Court heard.

The incident took place on the morning of 24 September last year. Turmel was 24 at the time but the insurance policy for the vehicle only covered drivers aged 25 and over.

He admitted speeding and driving without valid insurance.

The owner of the vehicle was Turmel’s employer, Dane Sutton (33), who admitted not checking whether the insurance covered Turmel. He told the court that his business had four vans and that it had been an oversight.

Sutton also admitted not informing authorities of a change in his address in November.

Magistrate Bridget Shaw fined Turmel £100 for driving without insurance and an additional £80 for speeding.

Sutton was fined £1,500 for not having the correct insurance for the van and a further £300 for failing to report his change of address. He was given a month to pay.
