A UKRAINIAN bomb disposal expert is one of the guests speaking in Jersey next week, as part of a series of events held to mark the country’s Independence Day.

Uliana Yurenko, a Ukrainian national who delivers bomb disposal training in the country, is to appear on a panel alongside Ben Remfrey, an explosive ordnance disposal expert from the charity Friends of Ukraine-EOD.

Cultural events, including pebble- and shell-painting as well as music, baking and film screenings, are also on the programme. Education Minister Inna Gardiner thanked Jersey’s Ukrainian community, adding: ‘Although Jersey has had a Ukrainian community for many years, we know that there are some families who have made Jersey their home as a result of the war with Russia. We’ve already seen from the Battle of Flowers how much an exchange of cultures can enrich everyone’s experiences.’

Ukraine Independence Day is celebrated on 24 August each year, marking the date when the country declared independence from the Soviet Union. It follows Ukraine’s Flag Day, which is celebrated on 23 August.

The events were organised by the International Cultural Centre Jersey.
