INQUESTS have been opened into the deaths of a father and son who died following a suspected hit-and-run.
Dean Lowe (48) and 11-year-old Charlie died within a few hours of the collision on Rue de Fauvic on the evening of Saturday 5 August.
Deputy Viscount Mark Harris conducted the formal opening for both victims’ inquests at Morier House yesterday, which involved two short hearings, with no family members in attendance.
Police coroner’s officer Kate Falle said that both Islanders had been pronounced dead in the Emergency Department in the hours following the collision: Mr Lowe at 11.15pm and his son at 12.01am.
After approving the release of the bodies so that funerals can take place, Advocate Harris adjourned both inquests pending the outcome of the States police investigation into the incident.
A 28-year-old man – who has not been named – was arrested in St Helier on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and failing to stop and report a collision. He was later released on bail while further investigations are carried out.
A fundraising page was set up in memory of the pair, with the aim of ‘having a positive impact in the Island for performing arts’ – one of Mr Lowe’s and Charlie’s ‘passions in life’.
The money that is raised will be used to give ‘aspiring entertainers, musicians and drama students a chance to shine, allowing for further education and tuition and to continue to aid the development of those with learning disabilities’.
