High praise given to Trinity School in independent review

TRINITY Primary School has been praised for achieving strong results in core subjects, giving pupils a ‘pivotal role’ in decision making and creating a ‘culture of kindness’ among students.

A team of four independent reviewers who visited the school between 23 and 25 May praised teaching staff and management, and found that pupils were ‘proud’ to be part of the school community.

The review team’s report, released yesterday, stated: ‘Children’s best interests sit at the heart of the school.

‘It is rare to find children so involved and playing such a central and pivotal role in shaping a school as they do here.

‘Pupils’ views are a significant factor in agreeing initiatives and in driving the school’s development.’

Commenting on the atmosphere within the primary, the report said: ‘The school’s promotion of pupils’ personal, social, health education (PSHE) and citizenship are incredibly strong. It helps to create a culture of kindness across the school and develops mature, thoughtful and considerate pupils by the bucket load.’

The report found that relationships across the school were ‘warm and friendly’ with ‘staff taking the time to listen, value and respond to children’s views and opinions’.

It added: ‘Teachers and pupils are proud to be members of the school and this is evident in the consistently positive attitudes in and around the school and in pupils’ levels of achievement.

‘Pupils achieve well, so that results in reading, mathematics and writing compare favourably with Jersey averages.’

The report also noted that ‘a considerable strength of the school’ was the ‘very high levels pupils achieve in developing the qualities and attributes needed to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society’.

Reviews take place every three years and provide an evaluation of a school’s environment, the behaviours and personal development of pupils, the school’s leadership, and the standards of teaching.

Head teacher Katy McMahon, who was described in a staff survey as a ‘transparent and inspiring leader’ said: ‘I am privileged to work with a supportive and committed team at Trinity School and I feel incredibly proud that their hard work and dedication has been recognised by this review.

‘I am also particularly pleased that our children were made to feel part of the process and had the opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions.’
