Fintech Award

Cygnetise

(36039189)

WINNER in the fintech category, Cygnetise impressed the judges with its innovation of the authorised signatory management process.

The application enables operations, finance, treasury and legal departments to digitally manage and share authorised signatory lists with banks and other counterparts in real time.

With a tamper-proof audit trail, customers radically reduce risk and fraud, while strengthening governance and saving time.

It is also one of the first applications of blockchain outside cryptocurrencies and one of the only original enterprise blockchain start-ups to have survived and thrived.

Notably, with businesses increasingly focused on how they can mitigate their environmental impact, Cygnetise can also support carbon-footprint-reduction targets by eliminating the need for manual, paper-based processes.

Already used in 40 countries and by 26 Jersey-based companies, Cygnetise is clearly offering an effective solution to a business need and is a fantastic example of how innovative fintech can be transformative.

ESG Award

Government of Jersey Marine Resources team – Seeing Below the Surface

(36039187)

THE Government of Jersey Marine Resources team was recognised for its innovative use of sonar and satellite technology to research, understand and manage the key species and habitats of marine life in Jersey’s waters.

Marine research is typically a complex and expensive area of study, requiring costly equipment capable of operating under water, and significant time resources. While, historically, extensive research campaigns would have been necessary, Marine Resources developed a cost- and time-effective advanced network of sonar monitoring stations combined with an active satellite tagging and underwater video programme to better understand when and where certain species of fish and shellfish were migrating and spawning.

To complete their fishery and habitat investigations, the team also aligned with a European-wide acoustic monitoring programme, for which Jersey is the Channel Island lead. This is the first time that Jersey, Guernsey, Sark and Alderney have worked together on an extensive marine research project.

Understanding such migratory routes and breeding patterns will support the team to manage and protect the wealth of marine life in Jersey waters, ensuring it continues to thrive.

Company Award

RaceNation/SportsGiving – Revolutionising fundraising in Jersey and beyond

(36039967)

THE prestigious Company Award was given to RaceNation/Sportsgiving in recognition of its commitment to making disruptive technology accessible to all by releasing its integrated fundraising software to the masses and, in doing so, helping to raise millions more for charities.

The fact that SportsGiving became the first donation platform to build a digital declaration specifically for the Jersey Gift Support Scheme into its online fundraising process, fully approved by Jersey Tax Office, impressed the judges.

The development means that charities no longer have to navigate complicated and time-consuming processes when claiming Jersey Gift Support. They can now secure millions more in potential fundraising in seconds, and completely free of charge.

It was also recognised that, for SportsGiving, this marked a considerable evolution for the business, which was originally developed to integrate event registration with fundraising opportunities.

Its innovative approach has transformed the way in which workplaces, schools and other group fundraising initiatives are managed, while also benefiting charities, communities and ultimately the Island as a whole as we work towards Jersey’s sustainability targets.

Innovation Award

RaceNation/SportsGiving – Revolutionising fundraising in Jersey and beyond

RACENATION/SportsGiving were recognised in the innovation category for developing an automated solution for a process that was costing Jersey-based charities millions of pounds in ‘lost’ eligible donations.

Having noted that charities were battling highly manual procedures when applying for Jersey Gift Support, RaceNation/SportsGiving created bespoke software to allow charities to access Jersey Gift Support in real time, meaning that they could secure millions more in potential fundraising, free and in seconds.

As the first donation platform to build a digital declaration for the Jersey Gift Support Scheme into the online fundraising process, fully approved by Jersey Tax Office, the development was welcomed by the sector and the wider community. Charity heads commented that the platform saved them valuable time and resources, enabling them to make multiple claims in minutes.

In addition, RaceNation/SportsGiving extended its commitment to charitable giving in the Island by releasing an integrated SportsGiving platform as a standalone entity, allowing anyone to set up a customisable and fully branded fundraising page.

In just a short time, the new addition has been immensely successful. Not only has it enabled more money to go to worthy causes, but through a unique feature enabling fundraisers to split their total between multiple charities, SportsGiving has also transformed the way in which workplaces, schools and other group fundraising initiatives are managed.

Productivity Award

WeDigital – Richardson’s Jersey Royals

(36039969)

WEDIGITAL developed a practical digital solution in response to changes in Customs requirements that had significant implications for one of its clients, Richardson’s Jersey Royals.

The web, brand and marketing agency worked with Richardson’s to overcome new electronic labelling and Customs pre-advice, which increased demands on its client’s human and financial resources.

Using Atlas, a new Jersey Post online shipment processing service, WeDigital created a bespoke and fully automated end-to-end integration process between the client’s ecommerce sales channel and the Atlas system.

This process minimised any need for human intervention, with all shipping and Customs requirements being completed by the system before shipments entered the postal system.

Beyond the cost-saving benefits, the streamlined system also led to increased workload efficiencies and opened up new product-line avenues, such as subscription box services, which offer notable opportunities to expand the business.

In the four months since it was launched, the new system has processed 3,400 online orders demonstrating the role digital innovation can have in increasing productivity, efficiency and profitability.

Student Award

Poppy Bourke – Les Quennevais School

(36039971)

CURRENTLY a Year 11 pupil, Poppy was nominated alongside Katie Ferreira, who won the Teacher Award, for her unwavering commitment to her design, engineer and construct level 2 studies.

Using industry-standard software used by qualified architects and construction professionals, she has produced a detailed portfolio of work on the built environment while also supporting other students to develop their understanding of the software and extracting data from the model she created – an advanced skill for a student of her age.

Poppy has also gone above and beyond representing the design, engineer and construct course to professionals from outside Jersey, with many commenting on the advanced level of her work and abilities.

With a particular focus on sustainable design, she has constructed models that are sensitive to the environment using advance digital skills and tools that are beyond what is taught in lessons and, demonstrating her dedication and passion, she has sought work experience in the construction industry, practically applying the skills she has learnt in lessons.

Already an ambassador for the design, engineer and construct course, she will no doubt forge a successful career in the industry.

Teacher Award

Katie Ferreira, Les Quennevais School

(36039973)

KATIE’S dedication and inspiring approach to enthusing her students made a particular impression on the judges.

For more than a decade, the now head of design, engineer and construct at Les Quennevais School, has honed her expertise in the digital space, in particular becoming an expert in using industry-standard building information modelling software, passing those skills on to her students.

Four years ago, she was instrumental in introducing lessons in design, engineer and construct as part of a pilot scheme in the Island and now teaches more than 500 pupils on the topic in her current position.

Her dedication has led to several of her students winning design awards, including the Primary Engineer Leaders Award, while she also introduced virtual reality headsets to allow students to see their building designs fully realised.

Of particular note is the excellent role model she has played to female students, meaning that today more than half of those undertaking a design, engineer and construct GCSE at Les Quennevais School are young women considering careers in the sector.

Katie has received numerous endorsements from industry professionals and this, combined with her dedication to inspiring a future generation of skilled designers, makes her more than worthy of the teacher TechAward.

Leadership Award

Werner Bornman

(36040090)

WERNER Bornman has played a pivotal role in advancing Jersey Electric’s digital and technology capabilities, impressing the panel of judges with his collaborative and inspiring approach.

Since joining JE in 2019, Werner has spearheaded several technology change, transformation and innovation projects that have improved efficiencies across the company and allowed JE to access data to make tangible improvements to the customer experience.

Werner also led the implementation, launch and ongoing evolution of the award-winning My JE app, which has helped thousands of Islanders to save money and energy.

What truly caught the attention of the judges was Werner’s firm belief in nurturing the team’s skill set and fostering individual growth rather than relying on external resources. Additionally, his collaborative approach and emphasis on teamwork were particularly noteworthy.

Werner and his team are powering JE to achieve its vision to inspire a zero-carbon future for the benefit of the Island and wider community.

Creative Award

ArtHouse Jersey – The Sound of Colour exhibition

(36040092)

EARLIER this year, ArtHouse Jersey showcased a creative and inspiring use of technology in its Sound of Colour exhibition, drawing inspiration from digital exhibitions held in London’s Tate Modern.

In a first of its kind for Jersey, the show featured immersive installations and interactive projections, from bold, psychedelic ‘liquid’ projections that respond to the music of Monteverdi, to invisible weather patterns and microscopic insect sounds, while the show also employed technology to play with sound and light, creating illusions and sensory stimulation.

In total, 1,600 people attended the 16-day exhibition, which was designed to offer an interactive and sensory experience with appeal for everyone.

A digital arts exhibition of this nature often requires rigorous research, prototyping and understanding of advanced data, processing and theories. However, ArtHouse Jersey believed the results of such a process could be playful, immersive and sensory while also opening a window into the complexities of the material world and the often-unseen phenomena and experiences that shape our surroundingsand perspectives.

Of particular commendation was ArtHouse Jersey’s success in manifesting such a complex digital process into a relatable, immersive experience for all.

The Sound of Colour produced by ArtHouse Jersey featured the artwork of Kimatica, Semiconductor and Burak Özdemir. It was curated by Natasha Dettman and James Tyson.

Start-up Award

Soteira

(36040094)

WINNING in the start-up category was Soteria – a crisis management business with a particular focus on cyber incidents. With more than 20 years of communications experience, Lynne Capie spearheaded Soteria after noticing a gap in the market for supporting businesses in their cyber-related crisis communications, noting that how a business responds to a cyber incident is crucial to its future market positioning and commercial success.

Since launching, Soteria has created a number of strategic partnerships and has worked with a number of businesses to develop their crisis communications plans and provided crisis services to organisations experiencing cyber incidents. Recently, this included working with global and Jersey-based businesses to offer digital services to clients experiencing a cyber crisis through strategies such as optimising the client’s crisis response and developing marketspecific tactics to mitigate the impact of the incident and the impact on the client’s reputation.

The strategies Soteria has implemented – from data collection to digital training – combined with its strategic partnering have led to a greater understanding of how to manage incidents and how to implement an effective response to a cyber-attack from a client, market and media perspective.

Public Sector Award

Jersey Coastguard – Trace app

(36040096)

BUILT in-house by the Jersey Coastguard team, Trace is a phone app that connects boaters with the coastguard, allowing for information such as where a boat is headed, how many are on board, vessel details and expected time of return to be provided directly.

Originally devised for commercial RIB operators, the app was so successful it was soon extended to leisure boaters and has streamlined the communication process with the coastguard while also minimising disruption to search and rescue operations.

The app also provides a useful resource for boaters with tide times, marina opening hours and tidal flow data, while the coastguard now has access to a live dashboard of who is on the water and when they are due back.

Notably, the app was developed by one of the coastguard team who was self-taught in the art of coding and app building. This resulted in significant cost-savings, which, alongside the impressive take-up – it is estimated around 50% of the Island’s boat owners have registered for Trace, with more than 1,000 users signed-up to date – highlighted the significant positive impact well-applied technology can have.
