FINAL preparations for this year’s Jersey Children’s Day event are under way.
Howard Davis Park will host live music from a range of youth performers, entertainment and activities on Sunday 2 July as part of the celebrations.
The free event – for which the JEP is the official media partner – was launched following a recommendation from the citizens’ panel set up in the wake of the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry in 2017, which called for 3 July to be Jersey Children’s Day.
The event has been held on – or close to – that date since 2020.
More than 45 organisations have offered to support Jersey Children’s Day and 30 people have volunteered to assist with the running of the family-friendly event.
Cheyenne O’Connor, of the independent survivor’s group at Community Partnership Trust, said: ‘We’ve had an amazingresponse from all the businesses and communities and I’d like to thank them all.
‘It’s important that we mark Children’s Day, not just because it’s a great day for families, but so we don’t forget the lessons of the past.’
Families are encouraged to bring a child-friendly alcohol-free picnic to the event with limited discounted catering options available. Free refreshment will be provided by Jersey Water.
Children’s Minister Inna Gardiner said: ‘I’d like to thank everyone who has contacted us to get involved with Children’s Day.
‘This event has always been intended and designed as an event for – and by – the whole community, so it’s wonderful to see people getting involved.’
Jersey primary school children have been invited to design a dream catcher from recycled materials to represent children’s rights. The final designs will be displayed at the Children’s Day event.
