Airline’s website sees rise in traffic after UK’s ‘roadmap’ announcement

Blue Islands said that visits to its website – as well as bookings – had shot up since UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement on Monday of a 21 June target date for all restrictions to be lifted.

The news also comes after Condor Ferries reported a wave of online traffic yesterday.

Blue Islands chief executive Rob Veron said that there was ‘pent-up demand’ for bookings amid renewed optimism that travel would be permitted in the coming months.

He said: ‘While exact dates are still to be confirmed, following Monday’s announcement of the [UK’s] planned easing of restrictions we have seen a significant increase in website visitors and bookings.

‘This is indicative of the pent-up demand we are expecting to see as travel restrictions begin to ease and confidence to book returns.

‘We know that right now booking flexibility is key, whether it’s reuniting with loved ones, missed celebrations, or a relaxing summer break. With that in mind, all new bookings with Blue Islands made until 14 March for travel this summer will enjoy free upgrades to our Blue Plus fares with no change fees for added peace of mind in case you need to change your plans.’

Guernsey and Jersey are part of the Common Travel Area, which should mean fewer restrictions compared to international destinations once local restrictions are lifted.

Mr Veron added: ‘We are ready to restart flying our full network and we look forward to supporting the States of Guernsey and Government of Jersey, together with Visit Guernsey and Visit Jersey, to reconnect our island communities and support inbound tourism when local restrictions are eased.

‘With the progress of the vaccine programme, we are standing by and looking forward to welcoming both local customers and visitors to our islands on board again soon. We believe the Channel Islands will be more desirable than ever for our visitors from the UK – safe and close to home, but will still feel a world away this summer.’
