A FERRY which could lay claim to the unenviable title of ‘worst ferry to serve the Channel Islands’ has sunk in port in the Pacific.

Emeraude – a high-speed craft which could carry 400 passengers and 32 cars – made her maiden voyage for Emeraude Lines from St Malo to the islands on 20 May 1994.

But the ship served the Channel Islands for just three and a half months – 34 days of which were spent broken down in port.

The ship, which suffered repeated engine problems, was eventually handed back to its builders.

It was later renamed Corsaire and ended up in French Polynesia, where it was laid up in the port of Papeete for many years after being continually plagued by engine problems.

The ship sank in 40m of water this week, despite efforts by firefighters to pump it out.
