Vice-Admiral Jerry Kyd will be sworn in as the Island?s new Lieutenant-Governor on Saturday at a special sitting of the Royal Court

THE new Lieutenant-Governor is due to take his oath of office on Saturday – marking the start of his five-year term as the King’s representative in the Island.

Vice-Admiral Jerry Kyd is replacing Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, whose term came to end earlier this year.

Vice-Admiral Kyd is scheduled to take the oath at a special sitting of the Royal Court led by the Bailiff, Sir Timothy Le Cocq, which starts at 9.45am.

Vice-Admiral Kyd said: ‘I am honoured to have been chosen to be His Majesty’s personal representative on the Island and am relishing the opportunity to play a full and active part in Island life during my time in office.’

A parade is due to start at 10.25am in the Royal Square on completion of the official swearing-in ceremony. It will consist of a ceremonial guard from the crew of the frigate HMS Iron Duke, along with a marching platoon from patrol ship HMS Severn, armed forces veterans and local cadets.

The parade will also be supported by His Majesty’s Band of Royal Marines.

Sir Timothy said: ‘I am delighted to welcome Vice-Admiral Kyd and Dr [Karen] Kyd [his wife] to Jersey. Jersey has always been very fortunate to have senior military officers to represent the Sovereign in the Island.

‘I am sure that during their time at Government House, Vice-Admiral and Dr Kyd will gain a great insight into Island life and grow to value this Island as we do.’

Vice-Admiral Kyd, a former Fleet Commander, becomes the first Royal Navy Lieutenant-Governor of Jersey since Admiral Sir William Pillar 32 years ago.

During his time as Fleet Commander, Vice-Admiral Kyd was accountable for the operational capability, training, safety and wellbeing of around 25,000 people.

He said: ‘The Island is a very special place and one both my wife and I are looking forward to calling home.’

A special service will follow the swearing-in ceremony at 11am, led by the Dean of Jersey, the Very Rev Mike Keirle, at the Town Church, which will be open to members of the public.
