AN Islander nearly missed the chance to meet the Queen during her 1989 visit to Jersey – after confusing Her Majesty with the evil queen from Snow White.
Katherine Donnelly was five years old when she was chosen to present a bouquet of flowers to the monarch.
At the time, Ms Donnelly’s mother worked as the secretary for the then-St Helier Constable.
Former town Greffier Patrick Freeley had asked Ms Donnelly’s mother whether her daughter would be willing to hand over the bouquet.
However, a young Ms Donnelly told her mum that she had no interest in meeting the Queen because she thought she had poisoned the apple which Snow White ate.
She said: ‘I do remember how important it made me feel having been chosen to present a bouquet of flowers to the Queen, and I remember her friendly, warm smile that put any doubts I had at ease regarding her being the wicked queen from Snow White.’
A JEP report from the Queen’s visit in 1989 said: ‘This was not the end of the matter, however, because when Mr Freeley was a guest at the reception on board the Royal Yacht Britannia he told the Queen the delightful saga, which amused her a great deal.’
Ms Donnelly added: ‘It probably means a lot more to me now having met the Queen with her being the longest reigning British monarch.’
