Fined for forgetting cannabis in wallet on return to Island

Claudio Miguel Abreu De Freitas (23), of Windsor Road, was travelling on a flight from Gatwick when he was stopped and searched at the Airport.

In the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday he admitted possession of a controlled class B drug. Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris said: ‘Cannabis is an illegal drug in Jersey and importing it is a very serious matter.

‘However, this was a small amount and it was for your own personal use.’

Centenier John Camara told the court that on 11 January, De Freitas was flying from Gatwick to Jersey, after a trip to Portugal.

The drug has been decriminalised in Portugal.

When he arrived with two others at Jersey Airport, he was stopped and taken to the Customs checking area. They were asked if they had anything to declare and they all said they did not.

However, a search of De Freitas found that he had 1g of cannabis in his wallet.

He was arrested and told officers that he had purchased it while in Portugal and had not taken it out of his wallet. He previously appeared at the parish hall and was asked to return in April, but did not show up. He also failed to appear at a subsequent Magistrate’s Court hearing.

Centenier Camara said that if he had gone to the parish hall when he should have, he would have escaped with a caution.

Mr Harris fined De Freitas £150.
