The proposed scheme to install a crossing at the junction with Rue du Pont Marquet forms part of the Government Plan which aims to provide safer routes for pupils cycling to Les Quennevais School.
A government spokesperson confirmed that the scheme had been delayed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, but was now moving forward again.
‘Delivery is scheduled for early 2021, but at this point we don’t have a firm date as there are issues in arranging the installation of specialist equipment due to the developing UK Covid-19 situation,’ the spokesperson said.
‘From the large urban area around Les Quennevais the railway path is the premier route into St Helier for cyclists, providing a safer off-road route all the way into town.’
The project follows a consultation in 2018 which identified that users of the Railway Walk had concerns about the safety of the intersection, with 75% in support of a crossing being installed.
As well as enabling Les Quennevais’ pupils to cycle to school on an off-road route, the Railway Walk is also used by Mont Nicolle School, which operated a ‘walking bus’ for some pupils prior to the pandemic.
Deputy Montfort Tadier, who represents St Brelade, met officials from the Infrastructure Department earlier this month in order to seek an update on the project.
