LOOKING BACK: Air Displays

Power, speed and daring – the traditional qualities of the Air Display – thrilled thousands at West Park and surrounding vantage points on 14th September 1972 despite the poor weather.
Ancient defences and modern silhouetted together against the bright sunshine at West Park on Thursday 12th September 1963 as the Mark 1 Avro Vulcan bomber circles around the Air Display’s arena. Coming in low and silently over the sea, its size gave the impression it was just lazing through the air. Even without the additional terrible menace of a load of bombs, the V-bombers have the look of menace in their form and incredible power. The first impression of silence was broken when New Zealander Flt.-Lt. John Stanley and his crew of four turned just short of the shore. The sound from the four jet engines, each with a thrust of 11,000 pounds, was almost solid and echoed back from the buildings on the far side of the Esplanade so loudly that quite a few people turned involuntarily, thinking there was another plane coming up from behind.
