A WOMAN from Poland has admitted driving on the wrong side of a road following a ‘momentary lapse of concentration’ after returning from her homeland.

In the Magistrate’s Court on Friday, Roksana Sobiuseik (26) admitted driving without due care and attention in May this year.

She also pleaded guilty to driving a car for which she wasn’t insured. She was fined a total of £2,000 for the two offences.

But speaking through a Polish interpreter, she explained to the court that she had just returned to Jersey from her home country, was confused and had forgotten to drive on the left.

Advocate Jordan Gollop, prosecuting, said Sobiuseik was seen heading along the right-hand side of St Saviour’s Road at 11.40pm on 7 May, stopping at Domino’s pizza takeaway.

She admitted to the police that the car belonged to a friend and she was not insured to drive it.

She held a Polish driving licence but not a Jersey one.

Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris said the offences could result in a prison sentence but took into account that she was a first offender who had pleaded guilty at her first appearance.

Of her driving on the wrong side of the road, he added: ‘It was a momentary lapse of concentration. No accident resulted.’

He imposed fines of £400 for driving without due care and attention and £1,600 for driving without insurance.

Sobiuseik was also banned from driving in Jersey for three months.
