ARTISTS are being invited to submit designs for giant-tortoise sculptures which will be the focus of Durrell’s Tortoise Takeover public art trail next summer.

The project follows the success of the Go Wild Gorillas trail in 2019, which saw 40 large sculptures painted by artists and placed in locations around the Island.

So far more than 30 giant tortoise sculptures – designed exclusively by Wild in Art in collaboration with reptile experts at Jersey Zoo – have been sponsored by local businesses, and will go on display in 2023 to inspire Islanders and visitors to explore Jersey and connect with nature.

Now local and international artists are being asked to submit designs to customise the sculptures.

The closing date for entries is Tuesday 1 November, and the submissions will be shortlisted before being presented to the event’s sponsors, who will choose their favourite design for their tortoise.

There will also be a series of ‘young’ tortoises decorated by schools and community groups that will form their own trail.

Alex Shears, Durrell’s director of communications and fundraising, said: ‘Tortoise Takeover provides artists with unique, commissioned opportunities and the potential to establish relationships with businesses from all sectors as well as potential patrons.

‘The record-breaking auction for Go Wild Gorillas in 2019 really showcased the creative talent of the artists that partake in these sculpture trails. I can’t wait to see what incredible designs we receive from artists both in Jersey and further afield for our marvellous new tortoise sculpture.’

Businesses can still get involved in the trail by sponsoring a giant sculpture – as well as a young tortoise sculpture for a school or community group.

Those who are interested can contact the team at Durrell through their website at durrell.org/tortoise-takeover, which is also where artist packs can be downloaded.
