Residents evacuate after fire breaks out on balcony of St Helier flat

RESIDENTS were forced to evacuate their flats after a fire broke out on Saturday evening.

Fire crews were called out just after 9pm following reports of a fire on a balcony in a block of flats in St Helier.

Two fire engines with nine firefighters from Green Watch initially responded and were backed up by a further fire engine crewed by an on-call team.

In a post on Facebook, Jersey Fire and Rescue said the fire and beginning to spread into the building and the floors below.

They added: ‘Firefighters immediately got a firefighting jet to work at the exterior of the building whilst two teams wearing breathing apparatus made an entry into the flats compromised by fire.

‘The blaze was quickly brought under control, preventing any further fire spread or damage.

‘The cause of the fire is believed to be from smoking materials.’
