A PARISH Constable has pledged to impose a three-year embargo on work to a section of road following repeated incidents of disruption.
Constable Mike Jackson said that Le Boulevard in St Aubin and two adjoining roads had been dug up on several occasions in recent years, with works on the electricity and gas supply, as well as water mains, requiring closures while contractors dug up the road.
In a letter to affected villagers, Mr Jackson said that Pallot Tarmac had been appointed to resurface Le Boulevard, Mont du Boulevard and Quai Bisson, starting in mid-February at the conclusion of the existing resurfacing project along Route de Noirmont.
The St Brelade Constable, who runs a marine supplies business on Le Boulevard, which also serves as St Aubin’s post office, said that once the resurfacing work was complete, a three-year embargo would be placed on the affected stretches in order to bring an end to the disruption.
Mr Jackson told the JEP that such an embargo would fall under the Traffic Works Law.
“From a public point of view we all get sick and tired of continual roadworks,” he said.
“It’s regrettable that virtually all our services run under the road and that it therefore has to be dug up whenever work takes place.
“When we are resurfacing a road, we would always give the utility companies at least six months’ notice so they can flag any concerns or tackle work that’s required, and we will accommodate them where possible.
“We are seeking to ensure that any remaining necessary work is carried out promptly before the resurfacing work starts, and that, after that, we will all get a bit of respite.”
