JERSEY recorded the lowest number of births since 1945 in 2024, newly released figures have shown.
According to the latest annual statement from the Office of the Superintendent Registrar, the 330 girls and 386 boys born last year also marked a 10% decrease in births in comparison to 2023, and 28% fewer births compared to 2014.
The most popular name for a boy last year was Theodore, while the most popular name for a girl was Isla.
The number of births recorded in 2024 was also lower than the number of registered deaths – 877.
Of those, 36% occurred in the General Hospital, 46% in a care facility and 18% in the community.
Last year’s figure marks the highest number of deaths registered in Jersey since 1995 and is also a 5% increase in comparison to 2023.
Meanwhile, there were 381 marriages last year, which was seven more than the year before.
Of those, 83% involved civil marriage ceremonies.
The most popular months for marriage in Jersey were August and September.
