Praise for path and railings at historic harbour

The project was carried out by the Infrastructure Department and is part of a larger scheme to improve access for cyclists and pedestrians around the area.

Nearby, work is continuing to construct a boardwalk along the eastern edge of the French Harbour, to prevent Islanders from having to cycle or walk in the road.

Commenting on a Facebook post showing a photo of the railings on Quai aux Marchands – which run alongside the English Harbour – Warren Le Sueur, organiser of the Weekender festival, said he thought the Infrastructure Department had done a good job.

And he added that the white railings running alongside the Old Harbour – just metres away – should be replaced in the same style.

‘All railings should look traditional and in-keeping with the granite surroundings in that area,’ he said.

‘The job just completed is an excellent job. The white cheap and nasty ones should be replaced eventually by the more ornate black railings.’

Meanwhile, Helier J Falle said: ‘Yes I too think it is a very nice job. Well thought out and executed.’

But Andy Jay, the Islander who composed the Facebook post, said he liked the new fixtures but questioned their safety.

‘Top marks for a neat job making these new railings look traditional and as if they had been there for many years, matching the diamond-bar style found elsewhere in the area,’ he said.

‘But I do wonder why, if we only need railings here because of the new cycle path, they must be for safety’s sake to stop cyclists falling over the wall in case of an accident. If there is such an accident, it is not going to be much fun colliding with the pointy bars and the tops of the posts.’

The Infrastructure Department were approached for comment but did not respond prior to publication.
