RESIDENTS from 21 homes in the Springfield area have been evacuated this afternoon after reports of a potential gas escape.
Firefighters and staff from gas supplier Island Energy rushed to the scene after receiving a call about gas and it was decided to evacuate residents from nearby Le Geyt Estate.
Jersey Fire and Rescue said the incident was being dealt with as swiftly as possible, but advised motorists to avoid the area with St Saviour’s Road having been reduced to one lane.
A spokesperson for Island Energy said: “Engineers are currently responding to a potential gas escape.
“Our team follows a very strict policy and procedure in the event of a gas escape and, when called to attend, use highly sensitive gas detection equipment, and follow a thorough investigation process on all call-outs, monitoring inside and outside properties within a wide radius to ensure safety.
“Working with Jersey Fire and Rescue, our engineers are currently on-site working to locate, and if found repair, any gas escape – the evacuation of homes and properties in the vicinity, in this case around 20 flats, is precautionary, and again is best practice in these situations.
“We would like to thank the residents of the area for their understanding and co-operation and reassure them we are doing everything possible to get them back into their homes as quickly and safely as possible.”
