Deportation to be considered for ‘furious’ man who attacked woman

The Magistrates Court

A “WIDE-EYED and furious” man who attacked a woman and left her with two black eyes has been remanded in custody – and warned that he could face deportation after he is sentenced.

The Magistrate’s Court heard that 42-year-old Marcio Spinola had been drinking when he attacked the woman over the festive period.

Spinola, who followed proceedings in court via a Portuguese interpreter, admitted two charges of assault.

Legal adviser Kerry Grieve, prosecuting, said the woman suffered black eyes and other cuts and bruises to her face after Spinola attacked her at a flat in St Helier twice on the same day.

Ms Grieve said: “The woman said he was wide-eyed because he had been drinking or smoking, and furious.”

In his police interview, Spinola admitted he had been drinking on the day in question but could not remember how much.

Ms Grieve said he had no previous convictions for assault but did have previous convictions for supplying drugs.

Advocate Lucy Marks, defending, said the blows delivered had been from open palms rather than from fists, and that Spinola had pleaded guilty.

She added that her client had lived in Jersey for 20 years and would lose his job if he was remanded in custody. She asked for the court to grant him bail.

Assistant Magistrate Adam Clarke said there was a risk Spinola would reoffend or interfere with witnesses if he was released on bail, so remanded him in custody until sentencing in the Magistrate’s Court on 21 January.

And he said that at the sentencing he would consider recommending his deportation.
