Many Islanders have taken their rods to the coast at high tide to seek relaxation and potentially catch something to eat, but some have reported that they have been told this is not allowed as part of the daily exercise allowance.
A sign was put up at St Catherine’s Breakwater stating ‘no fishing due to lockdown rules’. However, it is unclear who erected the sign.
The JEP has sought clarification from the States police and the honorary police, with both organisations directing queries to the Government of Jersey press office. No answer was forthcoming from the government to a query first lodged on Wednesday morning.
The Jersey Freshwater Angling Association closed all of its waters, including the reservoirs at Grands Vaux, Queen’s Valley and Val de la Mare, in the aftermath of lockdown measures being brought in on 30 March.
Scott Johnson, chairman of the JFAA, said that action had been taken ahead of any specific direction that fishing was not permitted.
Mr Johnson admitted that it was unclear whether individuals were currently permitted to fish from points around the Island’s coast.
‘I agree there is some confusion, especially as people are allowed to go in the sea for surfing or kayaking,’ he said.
‘Some people might count fishing as exercise, while others would not, but people’s mental wellbeing is also a factor.’
Steven Lewis, an angler who runs the Jersey CI Fishing page on Facebook, said he felt fishing should definitely be allowed.
‘I have seen nothing but great conduct from local anglers whilst out during my two hours’ exercise,’ he said.
‘Almost all have been on their own, in remote locations where the general public are not.
‘As long as people are adhering to social-distancing, not travelling too far from their household and not abusing the two hours we have been given, then they should be entitled to fish. Fishing is not only physical exercise, but it also relieves a lot of emotional and mental pressure.
‘There really is nothing better than being alone, next to the sea watching the sunrise and catching some local fish to take home for dinner for the family.’
